STILL TALKING ABOUT THE 2023 ONDO RALLY: QUICKSPACE POST-EVENT HEALTH AND SAFETY EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The 2023 Ondo Motor Rally was an exciting event that brought together a diverse group of participants from across the country. However, it is important to evaluate the health and safety measures put in place to ensure that the event was conducted safely and healthily. The following is a review of the health and safety measures put in place during the 2023 Ondo Motor Rally:

Medical Services: The medical services provided at the event were satisfactory. The medical team comprising a doctor, nurses, and a health technician, were well-trained and adequately equipped to handle any medical emergencies that could have arisen during the event.

There was also a fully equipped ambulance on stand-by with referral hospitals and clinics with medical personnel notified to be on 12 hours stand-by for any emergencies

Recommendations:

Despite the measures put in place, there is always room for improvement. The following are recommendations that could be implemented to ensure the safety and health of the participants in future motor rallies:

Safety Equipment: The safety equipment provided to the power bike participants was of high quality and met the required standards, however, those of the drivers and local bikers were below the standard required by the law of FRSC as most performed without helmets and the same goes for the drivers. The organizers need to insist on helmets, gloves, nose covers, eye goggles, and other safety gear to ensure the health and safety of all the participants.

Route Safety: The route chosen for the motor rally was well-graded, but not clearly marked with neon lights as the dust was blinding. Adequate safety barriers must be put in place to protect the participants while for the spectators, the safety staff need to be adequately briefed to know how to control the crowd at all times. A delineation of particular crowd limits is properly marked to prevent any potential accidents.

Crowd Control: The organizers put in place some measures to control the crowds during the event. However, as already mentioned above the security personnel deployed at strategic locations got so involved with event watching that they completely forgot to do their jobs to ensure that the spectators did not interfere with the participants.

Pre-event Medical Check-ups: It is recommended that all participants undergo a medical check-up before the event. This will help to identify any underlying medical conditions that could turn out aggravated during the event.

Enhanced Safety Equipment: The organizers should consider investing in enhanced safety equipment that meets the latest safety standards; in addition to neon lights, there is the need for used tyres or soft-landing barricades along race track routes. This will provide an additional layer of protection for the participants. Work n Play may also need to look into the purchases of defibrillators, fire extinguishers, etc to establish standards required by international companies hoping to be involved as sponsors.

Safety Briefing: The organizers should provide a comprehensive safety briefing; particularly on available first aid, etc the night or morning of the event to all participants. This will ensure that all participants are aware of the potential risks and the safety measures put in place to mitigate these risks.

Announcements: there is a need for megaphones mounted at strategic locations for the dissemination of information that would then be implanted by the guide crowd control officials.

Passing information of importance: There should be a demonstration, at the beginning of the event of strategic locations of the medical personnel, toilets, exits, and safety assembly areas in case of emergencies and mentions of the designated health and safety officials to turn to in cases of emergencies.

Overall, the 2023 Ondo Motor Rally was conducted safely and healthily. Gratefully, the organizers put in place adequate measures to ensure the safety and health of the participants. However, as already mentioned, there is always room for improvement, and the recommendations provided above could be implemented to enhance the safety and health of the participants in future rallies.
