YOU CAN SUCCEED WITHOUT CHEATING

By SIMEON .U. CHARLES

There is a slender line between the promise of making it through short cut to success and the reality of moral breakdown, spiritual emptiness and systemic destruction of true values. In this very important book, the author, Simeon makes a compelling and well-documented case that fraud in form of cheating is actually delivering a fatal blow not only to our individual lives but also to the family value system and societal well-being.

Radical as such declaration seem, they actually reflect process that had steadily gained momentum around the country. ‘YOU CAN SUCCEED WITHOUT CHEATING’ provides an overview of what this situation is, of the actions needed to reverse the trend and what are the best alternatives for the individuals, as well as a detailed agenda for social change. Simeon shows that to have a virtuous, humane, and progressive society, cheating and malpractices as embodied in the craze for short-cuts, must be eliminated in favour of endeavour based on deep rooted values that encourages and nurtures hard work and resourcefulness.

In his words;

‘The book will help in turning around the ambition, thinking and views of the youths from such untoward views or behaviour to self reliance and application of skills development of honesty and self-actualization through hard work as well as shunning ambition that will lower their esteem before the international market in their effort to receive education.’

‘Sustained effort has been made to take a holistic approach on the issues by not look only at the causes of cheating and examination malpractices but by also making reference to what stakeholders have been doing in this direction and what they ought to do.’

Simeon went on to outlined numerous specific actions to free the creative power of individuals through the pursuit of specific sets of self and societal valued principles within a culture that nurtures good family history and responsibility.

Extensively researched, powerfully argued, eye-opening and speaking the language everyone understands, the author seriously critiques how such vices as cheating, manipulations and malpractices are destroying the things of real value in the country – like cancer destroys life.

The book calls for need for everyone to pursue the ideals of uprightness, integrity and honour as alternatives to a cheating dominated, corrupted and amoral Nigeria.

Every good reader has a line(s), a paragraph or chapter in a good self-help book. You just fall in love with such section of the book. You feel as if it relates to you personally; as if it is written for you, just you. And you return to it again and again over time. You turn to it whenever you needed solace, inspiration, or perspective. I'm sure every good reader has such book and for those who have not read this book under review, when you do, I’m sure you would find something to love in ‘YOU CAN SUCCEED WITHOUT CHEATING’. For me, it is these three reflexive lines in the chapter titled ‘A BETTER YOU.’ It reads;

‘I had the tendency to view others and not myself as failures and to blame others instead of myself for any setbacks I had’

The author then goes on to say how this line of thought eventually changed and why. The first place to begin, he said, is our mind set and collectively we can move forward.
