TOPIC TODAY: One law for him, another for her. Why is it "okay" for men to have a "last fun" before marriage, but a "disgrace" when a woman does the same? Is it tradition or just unfairness?

SCENE: A Bar in Ikeja. Nne is holding her phone out for everyone to see. On the screen, a girl is crying and kneeling, begging her fiancé.

​NNE (Disgusted):

​You guys, come and look at this. This girl is begging her fiancé to take her back. He cancelled their wedding because he caught her cheating. She’s crying like her life is over.

​OLA (Sipping his drink, nodding):

​As he should! A woman who is about to marry should be pure and focused. If she can cheat now, she will cheat forever. He did the right thing to walk away. No man wants a "used" or disloyal wife.

​JIDE (Laughing dryly):

​It’s funny, Ola. Last month, when your cousin had his "Bachelor’s Eve" and stayed out all night with two girls, you and the other guys were hailing him. You called it his "last run" before the ring. Why was he a "king" for doing it, but this girl is a "demon" for the same thing?

​NNE: ​Exactly, Jide! That’s the point. When a guy sleeps with someone else. Whether before the night before his wedding or not, people laugh and say "boys will be boys." But when a girl does it, she’s labelled, abused and moralised as a "sinful woman." The math isn’t adding up.

​JENNIFER (Tapping her chin):

​This is what we call a Double Standard. Society has built a system where a man’s cheating is seen as a "mistake," but a woman’s cheating is seen as a "character failure." As the saying goes, "The laws are silent when the powerful speak." We judge women harshly to keep them in check, while giving men a free pass.

​EOO (Looking at the girl in the video):

​Betrayal has no gender. A broken heart feels the same whether you are a man or a woman. When we hail the man but stone the woman, we are not searching for "morals" - we are just being bullies. Truth is a mirror; it doesn't care if you are wearing a suit or a dress.

​OLA: ​Say all the grammar you want. A man is the head. If the head is a bit shaky, the house stands. If the foundation - the woman - is shaky, the whole house falls. That is how it has always been.

​NNE: ​Then the house deserves to fall! If you want a loyal wife, be a loyal husband. Simple.

WHY WOMEN WON'T GO TO HEAVEN

First is to have the writer introduce the main character(s) and intimate something about the situation she/they are in-i.e the conflict that will provide dramatic twine for the story; (2) to get us interested and involved; and (3) to do it all in a timely fashion, i.e. it stops being an opening as soon as possible and gets on with the story.... ‘WHY WOMEN WON’T MAKE IT TO HEAVEN’ succeeded in doing just that...it introduces us to the characters, showed us where they were, and showed that they’ve gotten concerns or problems. And it does all these in the first page; starting with a long paragraph and quick five short paragraphs. After this, the story is up and running as the conflicts between a husband and his wife, then similar issues between other husbands and their wives escalates with disastrous consequences. TENANTS OF THE HOUSE
